Our family history is not a single ancestral line. It is a network of families whose lives repeatedly crossed the Indigenous homelands and communities of the Northeast—from Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley through the Mohawk and Hudson valleys, Schaghticoke, Odanak, Coös, Vermont, the Adirondacks, and Greenfield.

Some of these Indigenous ancestral connections can be documented through historical records and genealogical descent. Others remain probable, possible, or unresolved. Still others reveal important relationships of kinship, community, residence, and shared history without themselves establishing Indigenous ancestry.

The generations below bring these interconnected lines together while distinguishing documented relationships from connections that remain under investigation. Dates are approximate where the surviving record does not support greater precision.

Status: The Indigenous identity of Cornelis Van Slyck's wife and their children is supported by the colonial record. The personal name “Ots-Toch,” however, comes from later genealogical tradition and is not presently known from a seventeenth-century record.

Catoneras (ca. 1600–1640s) m. Cornelis Jansen Van Texel / Van Tassel (ca. 1600–1660)
Residence: Indigenous homelands of Long Island and the lower Hudson region.
Status: Early-eighteenth-century testimony by her descendants identifies Catoneras as Jan Cornelissen Van Texel's Indigenous mother and describes his Long Island land rights as inherited through her.

As the documented record illustrates, our family's history in New York and New England is not a single ancestral line. It is a convergence of families whose paths repeatedly crossed the same homelands.

The surviving record documents Indigenous ancestry within this larger network while also revealing generations of kinship, residence, migration, marriage, and community relationships extending across Long Island, the Hudson and Mohawk valleys, Schaghticoke, Odanak, Coös, Vermont, the Adirondacks, and Greenfield.

Some relationships can be established directly. Others remain probable or unresolved. As new records are located, earlier conclusions may be strengthened, revised, or corrected. That distinction is part of the history rather than something to conceal.
